Unicorn

Unicorn

Unicorn, a British group from Surrey, could have been as big as The Eagles or Poco if they had come from California. Known for their association with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, who produced their second and third albums, their music draws from both rock and country and has a sound similar to another British group, Brinsley Schwarz.

Unicorn's debut LP Uphill All the Way was released in 1971 and paid homage to some of the best songwriters of the era such as Jimmy Webb, Joe Cocker, Neil Young, and Gerry Rafferty. The band began touring Europe and playing in countries such as Italy, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Their second album Blue Pine Trees (1974) was heavily influenced by the Byrds and Fairport Convention, while their third album Too Many Crooks (1976) presented a set of superior Ken Baker songs, including "Disco Dancer," "No Way Out of Here," and the title track. Despite their growing popularity and tours as the support act for Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Styx, and Linda Ronstadt, the emergence of punk rock in mid-1977 spelled the end for their soft rock/country-rock sound, leading to their eventual disbandment.
