Smash Palace
Smash Palace turned a cease-and-desist letter from Quincy Jones into the start of a cult power-pop legacy. After their former band Quincy was legally forced to rename, brothers Stephen and Brian Butler launched Smash Palace in 1983, landing a deal with Epic Records and releasing their self-titled debut in 1985. But when their Polygram follow-up mysteriously vanished into label purgatory, the band joined the ranks of rock mythology—with one of the most infamous “lost albums” in power-pop history. A 14-year detour followed, with the Butlers writing songs for others before reclaiming their own catalog in 1999. Since then, they’ve independently released 13 albums, building a career that’s as resilient as it is melodic. Now, Think Like A Key Music resurrects the long-buried 87 album with the original lineup finally reunited—delivering a time capsule from the brink and proving that great songs don’t come with expiration dates. Smash Palace didn’t just survive the music industry’s chaos—they outwrote it.
