In any sane world, this album would sit alongside Odessey & Oracle and Village Green. Instead, it sat in the bargain bin. The world wasn't sane in 1970 either.
Jimmy Campbell walked into Trident Studios with Billy Kinsley, Tony Crane, Joey Molland, and songs so painfully honest they made Lennon's confessionals sound like small talk. Half Baked married devastating lyrics to lush orchestration by Nick Ryan and Donald Fraser — swinging from Lennon-meets-Spector rock ("So Lonely Without You") to the near-unbearable, Brel-like crescendo of "Don't Leave Me Now," recorded with Campbell singing in the studio bathroom to capture the echo. Vertigo got behind it. Simon Dee called the single one of the strongest tracks he'd ever heard, then got sacked the day before Campbell was due on his show. The Ramones became fans. The charts didn't get the memo.
Nothing half baked about it. Never was.
